Mirabel AeroDream
Following its call for proposals, Aéroports de Montréal chose the I.Parks–Oger International Consortium to transform the former Mirabel terminal into a huge world-class theme park.
AeroDream (Rêveport in French) will be a one-of-a-kind attraction in North America, designed as a festive and cultural dream destination where visitors can relax in a summery, tropical atmosphere. The proposed concept, based on the themes of water and outer space, will invite guests, their families and friends to escape to strange and imaginary new worlds and immerse themselves in the wonders of high-tech.
The indoor multiplex, covering more than 100,000 m2, will be open year-round and geared toward people of all ages, including local visitors, tourists and business travellers. The initial phase of the project will cost an estimated $100 million, to be financed by the private sector.
AeroDream will bring a number of unique elements together under one roof, inviting visitors to relax and travel to worlds of the imagination on amazing voyages of adventure through virtual realms:
- Geodesic domes equipped with spherical screens to transport visitors to mysterious worlds and distant planets;
- A giant aquarium where guests are literally plunged into fantastic undersea worlds, allowing them to explore as they wander through transparent plastic tunnels;
- An indoor beach bathed in tropical warmth all year long, the perfect spot to take a well-earned siesta;
- A fitness centre featuring spas, hammams, saunas and therapeutic baths to rejuvenate the most demanding of customers;
- State-of-the-art cinemas with comfortable seating and special Hollywood décor, offering a first-rate selection of films.
The complex’s relaxing and festive atmosphere has it all: not only will there be a shopping mall, video arcade, karaoke/discothèque, restaurants and bars, but also a museum, interactive exhibition hall and television studio. Last but not least, there will be a children’s play area including a day-care for toddlers.
AeroDream will use all of the elements of the former terminal complex, including the terminal itself, aeroquay, parking facilities, hotel (which will be renovated) and administration building.
How the project hs progressed
Since the project was announced in February 2006, both parties have worked toward completing the steps necessary to begin construction.
- The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, federal Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, has approved the change to the Montréal–Mirabel Airport land-use plan submitted by Aéroports de Montréal following a series of consultations with the stakeholders involved.
- The Consortium has conducted qualitative and quantitative marketing studies in order to enhance the AeroDream concept, validate its positioning and align the scope of the project’s various elements with the preferences of the clientele targeted. Furthermore, the proposed hotel has undergone an in-depth technical assessment, with a similar assessment planned for the terminal before work can begin. Exploratory meetings have taken place with Quebec engineering and construction firms in order to assemble a project management team.
- ADM and the Consortium have held discussions and negotiations concerning the long-term leases that both parties signed in February 2007 in accordance with the memorandum of understanding.
