Airport improvements - Montréal – Trudeau

Montréal–Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (Montréal–Trudeau) is undergoing a major expansion and modernization designed to increase the terminal's capacity and substantially enhance the level of passenger service.

A broad expansion program launched in 2000 and completed in 2006 consisted of the construction of several brand-new facilities, including a jetty for flights to the United States, another for overseas flights and a huge international arrivals complex comprising a customs hall and baggage-claim area. The public arrivals hall was also enlarged. The program, which cost $716 million (before inflation), was carried out within budget and on time.

As part of its program of continuous maintenance and improvement, Aéroports de Montréal then proceeded with modernizing the domestic sector. The project, completed in December 2007, included harmonizing the interior design of the boarding lounges with that of the two other jetties, replacing the boarding bridges, as well as reconfiguring the aircraft docking stations in order to increase their number to 13. Commercial services were also revamped to increase the variety of shops and restaurants. In addition, the baggage-claim room on the arrivals level was expanded and the capacity of the carrousels boosted by 50%.

Another major project currently underway is the construction of a new transborder departures hall adjacent to the transborder jetty. The new hall will occupy two floors inside the Marriott Hotel currently under construction and will include a check-in area, a U.S. Customs area, a pre-boarding screening checkpoint, various shops and a baggage-claim room.

Several other maintenance and improvement projects are also planned, including:

  • Redeveloping the domestic and international departures halls in the existing terminal following the relocation of the transborder departures hall;
  • Relocating the service hangars at the western end of the airport’s aircraft manoeuvring area in order to allow for the possible extension of the international and transborder jetties;
  • Reconfiguring the road network in front of the terminal.

ADM is financing all of these improvements itself, with no government grants.
